Mixing and Mastering In Home Recording Studio.

Mixing And Mastering in a Recording Studio Are very complex topics, and the internet is full of tips, tutorials, suggestion and methods.

As a few basic level tips i learned to follow these..

1) Healthy Mixing levels of signal and clarity of recording is the prime source for good recording.
2) First clean the recorded track, strip silence in Pro Tools is excellent for doing this automatically.
3) Equalize and Then Compress each track
4) Use Parallel Compression for enhance all frequencies.
5) Use other plugins like, de-esser etc as required.
6) Mix all the track, very carefully adjusting the Volume Levels and Panning.
7) Let each instrument track sit in its own frequency space and panning position
8) Keep lower frequency instruments panned toward center, and high frequency instruments panned out.
9) Keep the center panning free to give prime importance to the vocal tracks.
10) Apply delays and reverb to increase the richness of each track.
11) Use a Maximizer plugin, if the volume of overall mix seems low and lifeless.

After mixing all the tracks to the optimal, proceed to Mastering.

Mastering (done on all tracks at one, so that Audio CD will be Consistent in Tone And Color.
1) Import all the mixed tracks into one session
2) Apply the mastering plugins, which will level, compress and bring out the rich tones. Do not over do the plugin presets.
3) Dither the tracks appropriately before bouncing to the output disk.

Please note: The suggestions are so many and complex, i have just outlined my experience and I am still learning, and have a long way to go, before coming an authority in any of this.

Just to give you an idea of a song I recorded in my home studio, here is the youtube link, it is my daughter Pooja singing the song.(Please note I replaced the live track she sang, with the studio recorded audio song for clarity)

Hope this information is useful to friends in this forum interested in Recording Professionally.
